I sort of have the ghetto alternative with a raised garden plot covered in frost cloth. I scatter old milk jugs full of water to act as thermal mass and absorb the sun.

But if you're just starting out you should probably stick with summer gardening until you get the hang of it.

Cheers!Rebeccahttp://open.salon.com/blog/the_almighty_becksternoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5437530886114278864.post-14723537196856210362010-03-07T21:55:39.820-07:002010-03-07T21:55:39.820-07:00I am envious of your longer growing season! However, I am trying to twist my husband's arm into helping me build a pseudo-green house this spring so I will keep you posted as to how it works out!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05827718321802434964noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5437530886114278864.post-21193205356742738672010-03-05T14:32:30.783-07:002010-03-05T14:32:30.783-07:00I stared down the voluntary simplicity road about ...I stared down the voluntary simplicity road about 20 years ago. And each time I took a step in that direction people around me acted like I was totally off my rocker... and I often agreed! But 95 times out of 100 I have come to the conclusion that the "normal" approach is really crazy, and the "radical" approach is really normal!

BTW - I don't know the weather patterns in Edmonton, but here in Denver the conventional gardening wisdom is that you have to have the cool weather stuff planted by St. Patrick's Day (March 18). I usually plant the spinach in the fall and winter it over, but I've been out preparing the plot for the snow peas and will probably plant them today or tomorrow.

Best to you on this adventure! I'm enjoying your blog!Rebeccahttp://open.salon.com/blog/the_almighty_becksternoreply@blogger.com
